Myfav rubbing grinding noise from rear

Hi all, i've just bought a 2 ltr impreza sport and there is a kind of rubbing grinding niose which sounds like it is coming from the passenger side rear wheel area.

I've jacked it up and given the wheel a wiggle but there is no play there so i guess it's not a wheel bearing.

i've drained the rear diff and changed the oil, there was no nasty residue or metal filings on the magnetic drain plug so i guess it's not the diff.

i've dismantled the rear drum and given it a good clean and there is no signs of brakes rubbing so i don't think the brakes are stuck on.

can any one give me any clue as to what this could be please.

Before you start pulling wheel bearings off I had the same problem with my car and it went on for ages, it turned out to be a lip on the disc rubbing the backplate. I had the disc skimmed to remove the lip.

Thanks for the feedback but i have drums and not disks on the back of my car as it is a 1998 subaru sport, i dont think it's the wheel bearing, possibly the drive shaft or drive shaft bearing, but i would rather rule out the simple things before i get to the complicated bits, the rubbing seems to be coming from around the diff area. i had the back of the car jacked up and turned the wheels and it definately seems to be coming from the diff end and not the wheel side, i don't think it's the diff, thanks for the info, dave
