Festival of Speed theme announced
10/1/2008
Goodwood Announces the 2008 Festival of Speed theme
‘HAWTHORN TO HAMILTON – BRITAIN’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH WORLD MOTOR SPORT’
The Earl of March has today (Wednesday 19 December) confirmed the theme of the 2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is ‘Hawthorn to Hamilton – Britain’s Love Affair with World Motor Sport’. Britain has always played a key role in the global motor racing industry, forging successful relationships with the rest of the motor sport world. From Mike Hawthorn – who used a Ferrari to become Britain’s first Formula 1 World Champion fifty years ago in 1958 – to current F1 star Lewis Hamilton, driving a British engineered car with German power, British drivers and engineers have utilised global resources to achieve success. The 2008 Festival honours these winning combinations.
In recognising Britain’s role in shaping motor sport worldwide, the Festival will acknowledge the influence and achievements of iconic British figures, including Jim Clark, John Surtees, Colin McRae, Barry Sheene, Jackie Stewart, Derek Bell, Colin Chapman, British-based Gordon Murray and Adrian Newey. In addition, home-grown stars from the past and modern day heroes are expected to line up alongside their friends and adversaries from around the world at the celebrated 1.16 mile hillclimb, in a tribute to global motor sport.
The Festival will also feature the world’s finest competition cars and motorcycles, many of which have been influenced by British engineering or built in partnership with British expertise. In action will be everything from the pure-bred Vanwall of the 1950s, to the ground-breaking products of manufacturers such as Cosworth, Williams, Lola and Prodrive. And with significant anniversaries in 2008 for two of Britain’s most important race series – namely 50 years of the BTCC and 20 years of the British Superbike Championship – Goodwood will recognise the UK’s role in providing a high-profile, competitive environment for some of the world’s great manufacturers and racing stars.
Complementing the overall Festival theme will be a host of other attractions at the world’s greatest celebration of motoring. Away from the action-packed hillclimb and paddocks, Festival-goers will be able to relish some of the most stylish vehicles ever made at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance, glimpse into the future of personal transportation at the FoS-TECH technology pavilion, see many of motor sport’s famous faces up close, swoon at the mouth-watering display of supercars, and become a part of the action at the activity fields and Junior Festival of Speed.
Goodwood Festival of Speed founder, Lord March says: ‘It will be just fantastic to have so many great cars and drivers here at Goodwood to celebrate our theme for 2008. I look forward with much anticipation to seeing some of the great British drivers and UK-inspired machines in action.’

More news for Goodwood FoS
Festival of Speed to raise funds in memory of Colin McRae
11/4/2008
Following the passing of former World Rally Champion Colin McRae – who was a great Goodwood supporter and played an integral part in the Festival of Speed over many years – the event this year will raise funds in his memory and make a charitable donation to a cause chosen by his family.
McRae was Britain’s first World Rally Champion, who became arguably the best-known driver in the history of the sport due to his exciting, attacking style. He died in September 2007 along with his son and two friends when his helicopter crashed in the grounds of his house in Scotland.
Discussions are currently taking place with the McRae family regarding the recipient of the donation, and an announcement will be made shortly.
Each year the Festival of Speed works alongside its official fund-raising partner, the Richard Burns Foundation, to raise money for an appropriate charity or beneficiary. Goodwood and RBF – which was established in 2006 in memory of England’s only World Rally Champion – combine their respective skills and work together to mobilise the motor sport community in support of a different nominated cause every year, each of which is chosen to inspire and support people of all ages in their fight against adversity such as injury or illness. Burns died in 2005 following a long battle with cancer. The Foundation also incorporates the Michael Park Fund, which is dedicated to the WRC rally co-driver.

Goodwood Forest Rally Stage promises to Whirl Up a Dust Storm
11/4/2008
The forest on the hillside above Goodwood House will throng to the sound of both historic and modern rally cars as the Festival of Speed showcases the greatest loose-surface driving on its exciting Forest Rally Stage.
Following the untimely loss of Colin McRae last year, Goodwood will pay tribute to the great man and his achievements in the sport by pulling together a centrepiece display of the most iconic cars of his career. On display in the Forest rally Stage Service Area will be everything from his early machines, such as the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and Vauxhall Nova in which Colin began his career, through to the World Championship winning Subaru Impreza WRC and Nissan ‘Rally Raid’ pick up that provided Colin with one of his last competitive drives. Many of the cars with which he is most closely associated will also be in action on the Stage throughout the weekend. It is hoped that the display will also feature non-rally cars, such as the Ferrari he drove at Le Mans and the Jordon F1 car that he tested at Silverstone.
With no date conflict with the World Rally Championship, plans are afoot to bring the protagonists of the modern sport to the event once more. Subaru, BP Ford and Stobart Ford have already confirmed their attendance, and it is hoped that they will be joined by Citroen, and new outfit Suzuki, who entered the WRC at the beginning of the 2008 season.
The iconic Ford Escort celebrates its 40th birthday in 2008 and Goodwood will pay homage to this, one of the most successful rally cars of all time, by assembling a selection of the most famous vehicles from the models illustrious history. These will include Hannu Mikkola’s 1970 World Cup Rally winner, Ari Vatenen’s famous Rothmans Mk2 from the late Seventies and Malcolm Wilson’s Escort Cosworth, winner of the British Rally Championship in 1994.
Around 40 cars from the history of rallying will tackle the stage throughout all three days of the event. Ranging from early Sixties machines like the Mini Cooper S through to more contemporary machinery such as Skoda Fabia WRC car. These will appear alongside such legendary Group 4 machines as the Lancia Stratos and Porsche 911 and awesome fire-breathing Group B rally cars – so brutal they were banned in the 1980s. Expect to see the Audi Quattro Sport, Lancia Rallye 037, Peugeot 205 T16, Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, MG Metro 6R4, Opel Manta 400, and Ford RS200.
In action will be World Champions – Hannu Mikkola, Bjorn Waldergard and Stig Blomqvist – among other rallying legends including Rauno Aaltonen, Timo Makinen and former British Champions Russell Brookes and Marcus Dodd.
The Earl of March said: “I am delighted at the enthusiasm shown for the Forest Rally Stage since it was introduced in 2005. It had long been an ambition to see exciting and little-seen rally cars performing in their natural environment, and the course designed by the great Hannu Mikkola has created a wonderful stage on which to marvel at some of the very best and most spectacular driving that motor sport has to offer. It is terribly sad that Britain’s first World Rally Champion, Colin McRae, will no longer be in action with us, but we intend to remember his extraordinary career, and its impact on the sport worldwide, with the fabulous display in his honour. He is sadly missed by everyone who loves motor sport”

Sunday Times ‘Ingear’ Supercar Run showcases new Supercars
11/4/2008
The Goodwood Festival of Speed has firmly established itself as a great place to see the latest and best supercars from around the globe. The Sunday Times ‘InGear’ Supercar Run is unique in providing a dynamic environment in which the public can view new models for the first time. Unlike a conventional motor show, the Supercar Run affords a fantastic opportunity not only to exhibit a new supercar, but also to show it in action on the hillclimb. Last year saw more than 20 UK public debuts out of a 40-plus car entry, and early indications are that this year’s entry will be even stronger.
For 2008 the Sunday Times ‘InGear’ Supercar Run promises the very latest supercars from all around the world. Cars set to make their UK debuts will include Audi’s pioneering R8 V12 TDi, which uses proven Le Mans-winning diesel technology. Other UK debutants will include the stunning Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, Nissan’s fearsome GT-R and stylish the Artega GT from Germany.
It is also hoped that a number of sensational concept cars will be seen in action for the first time, including the Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS, using their V12 engine in the V8 Vantage chassis, as well as the svelte Bentley Continental GTZ, a car restyled by legendary design house Zagato and featuring their signature ‘double bubble’ design cues. The amazing Mazda Furai and Giugiaro’s latest hybrid concept sports car, the Ital Design Quaranta, should also appear for the first time in the UK.
This year the Supercar Run will also feature a number of cars that provide raw supercar performance through ultra lightweight technology. Cars in action will include the much anticipated KTM X-Bow in its final production form, the V8-powered Ariel Atom 500, the latest Lotus 2 Eleven and the electric Tesla Roadster from the USA. Also represented with their latest supercar models will be manufacturers such as Bugatti, Ferrari, BMW, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Morgan, Porsche and Spyker.
In all, nearly 50 great supercars will be in action on the Hill, which will certainly be a feast for the senses of the expected 150,000 visitors to the Festival of Speed.

F1, WRC, Le Mans and Motorcycling –the best of modern motor sport

Contemporary Formula One – the world’s best cars and fastest drivers
The Festival of Speed’s unique ability to attract the top works Formula 1 teams is its key strength, and already seven teams have indicated their intention to attend this year, just one week after their appearance at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Nowhere else in the world can you get so close to the latest and greatest cars and drivers.
• Scuderia Ferrari – the current constructors World Champions will be here from Italy to demonstrate their 2008 machine
• McLaren-Mercedes – last season’s car is expected to be in action all weekend, hopefully with current title contender Lewis Hamilton at the controls
• BMW-Sauber – the latest potential challengers to the F1 throne will be present over the Festival weekend, showcasing their ultra-competitive 2008 car
• Honda – British hero Jenson Button will be on hand to put the RA108 through its paces
• Red Bull – the beautiful Renault-powered RB4 will smoke its tyres all weekend
• Toyota – the latest car will be in action, demonstrating their new-found pace
• Williams-Toyota – the great British team will be at the Festival with their FW29, celebrating their 30th year in Formula 1
Look out in the paddock for familiar faces such as Sir Jackie Stewart, Martin Brundle, Mark Blundell, Murray Walker, Sir Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, Patrick Head, Ross Brawn, David Richards, Christian Horner and Adrian Newey, all of whom have attended the Festival in recent years.
World Rally Championship – famous names ‘on the loose’
With no World Rally Championship date clash this year, many of the top WRC teams are expected to be on hand to provide a thrilling demonstration of sideways driving, both on the Forest Rally Stage (see separate story) and on the hillclimb too. BP Ford, Stobart Ford and Subaru World Rally Team have confirmed their attendance, and it is hoped that Citroën, and WRC newcomers Suzuki will also be present.
The WRC cars will be based in a special service area adjacent to the Formula One Paddock, and will charge up the hillclimb course twice each day – once in the morning and again in the afternoon. But unlike other hillclimb entrants, upon reaching the top of the hill the WRC cars will divert to the Forest Rally Stage for a special demonstration of the ultimate high-speed off-road driving. They will share the Forest Rally Stage with a range of historic rally cars and great drivers from the history of the sport, including Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Rauno Aaltonen, Timo Makinen and Russell Brookes.
Stars of International circuit racing
There will also be a number of current Le Mans cars on the hill, still covered in the remains of unfortunate French insects whose last memory was a 600bhp monster charging towards them at 200mph. Heading the list is the incredible Audi R10, which made history by becoming the first diesel-powered car to win the great race in 2006, and is still the car to beat. Joining Audi will be Aston Martin Racing – the works outfit that took the GT1 class victory in 2007, recapturing the famous British marque’s Le Mans success of the 1950s – with their latest Gulf-liveried DBR9.
The greats of current motorcycle racing
In recent years the Festival has developed an enviable reputation for featuring a variety of the latest challengers from top-class international motorcycle sport, such as World Superbikes, MotoGP, World Endurance Championship, and the Isle of Man TT. In addition there is always a selection of stars from the British Superbike series. The 2008 event will be no exception and highlights of the motorcycle entries and featured in a separate release.
going to be a great weekend.....cant wait
so anyone else coming yet ?

11/4/2008
The theme of the 2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed is ‘Hawthorn to Hamilton – Britain’s Love Affair with World Motor Sport’.
In recognising Britain’s role in shaping motor sport worldwide, the Festival will acknowledge the influence and achievements of iconic British figures, including Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Colin McRae, Roger Clark, James Hunt, Barry Sheene, Jackie Stewart, Derek Bell, Colin Chapman, Adrian Newey and British-based Gordon Murray. In addition, home-grown stars from the past and modern day heroes will line up alongside their friends and adversaries from around the world at the celebrated 1.16 mile hillclimb, in a tribute to global motor sport.
There will be a focus on Britain’s collaborative involvement in a wealth of international projects, from Bentley and Audi’s Le Mans wins to Honda’s successes on both two and four wheels, as well as the achievements of great brands like Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz in Formula 1.
The significant anniversary this year of one of Britain’s most important race series – 50 years of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) – Goodwood will recognise the UK’s role in providing a high-profile, competitive environment for some of the world’s great manufacturers and racing stars.
The BTCC has been a mainstay of British National motor sport for half a century, with its enduring appeal due chiefly to a combination of close and competitive racing in cars recognisably similar to those you see every day on the roads. Goodwood will bring together around 20 important cars, from theclassic little-and-large rivals of the 1960s – the Mini and Ford Galaxie – to the Rover vs. Capri duels of the late 1970s and the iconic Sierra Cosworth and BMW M3 of the late 1980s, right up to the more recent Supertouring era, featuring title-winning cars from </B>Audi, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Vauxhall</B> and Volvo. Joining what promises to be the most complete collection of BTCC cars ever seen in action together will be a plethora of BTCC Champions.
Inaugural winner Jack Sears will drive the 1963 Ford Galaxie in which he took his second title; Australian Frank Gardner makes a rare appearance in the UK to drive his Broadspeed Ford Escort; champions Frank Biela and John Cleland will be behind the wheel of their title winning cars; Mini legend John Rhodes will smoke the tyres of his Cooper S while Richard Longdon is reunited with his double title-winning 1275GT; three-time champion Win Percy will also be at the Festival, as will the most successful BTCC driver of all time – four-time champion Andy Rouse.
The Festival will also celebrate the hugely popular British Superbike Championship, which 20 years go this established its current formula, catering for motorcycles that closely resemble road-going production machines. Over the years it has produced consistently high-quality competition and has established itself as the ideal proving ground for some of the world’s most talented riders. In attendance will be contemporary factory teams such as Honda, Ducati, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki. With star riders past and present, including John Reynolds, Chris Walker, Jamie Whitham and Terry Rymer, as well as current title contenders Leon Haslam, Cal Crutchlow, Tom Sykes and Michael Rutter.
The Festival will also commemorate 50 years of Cosworth with a class of significant racing cars from the innovative British company that designed the most successful Grand Prix engine of all time – the DFV that powered 155 GP winners. The range of cars will span from the Lotus 49 right through to the most recent Cosworth-powered F1 car from Jaguar. Fifty years of Lola will also be marked, with a diverse selection of cars from this versatile constructor, including examples from Formula One, Indy, CanAm, F5000 and sports car racing.
Away from pure competition motoring, AC’s centenary will be celebrated with a display of the most popular models in the dunhill Drivers Club walkway, including such iconic models as the Ace and legendary Cobra. Forty years of the trusty Ford Escort will be celebrated with a collection of the most iconic and significant cars from the model’s illustrious history both on the hillclimb and the Forest Rally Stage, and the 60th anniversary of Land Rover will marked in true Goodwood style with a spectacular central display in front of Goodwood House.
Goodwood Festival of Speed founder, Lord March says: ‘It will be just fantastic to have so many great cars and drivers here at Goodwood to celebrate our theme for 2008. I look forward with much anticipation to seeing some of the great British drivers and British-inspired machines in action.’

Top Fuel Dragsters set to Give Off Good Vibrations at Festival
11/4/2008
The earth will move – quite literally – as the Goodwood Festival of Speed plays host to a spectacular gathering of perhaps the world’s loudest competition cars – top fuel dragsters.
Building on the success of last year’s Bonneville Salt Flats recreation on the hallowed turf of the Goodwood Cricket Pitch – the world’s oldest – this year the Cricket Pitch will be turned in to a huge American drag strip. Positioned on this will be a spectacular gathering of more than a dozen of the most famous Top Fuel racers; from the first ‘slingshot’ models to the pioneering rear-engined examples of the 1960s and 70s. Most of these will be brought over from the USA specifically for the occasion.
Instead of the cars simply sitting on the display looking magnificent, however, they will periodically fire up each day and go through their engine warming procedure together – a spectacle known as a ‘cackle fest’. It may sound innocuous enough, but these cars are so startlingly loud that the ground vibrates beneath your feet and you can actually feel the noise hitting your chest. It promises to be a surreal experience and unlike anything the Festival audience has ever experienced before.
On display and in action will be everything from Art Chrisman’s very early ‘25’, to examples raced by some of drag racing’s most popular drivers including Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme, Don ‘Big Daddy’ Garlits and ‘TV’ Tommy Ivo. It is anticipated that one of Britain’s most famous top fuel dragsters, Mr 6, will also take part, along with a special appearance for Tommy Ivo’s incredible quad-engined ‘Showboat’ exhibition car.
Perhaps surprisingly drag racing is particularly relevant to this year’s Festival theme, which celebrate Britain’s love affair with world motor sport. Top American drag racers Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits toured the UK from 1963 to 1966 with their wild top fuel machines and sparked widespread British interest in this form of racing, which had previously only been popular in the USA. A healthy drag racing community quickly developed in Britain as a result, which still continues to thrive to this day.
