took the laptop into the shop to get them to sort it and they said it connects to their neetworks fine and can use the internet without a problem yet when i got it home it still doesn`t work, any ideas?

you need to repair the i.p address. what operating system are you on?

Have you got security on your wireless router/access point? If so, try changing the password/key on the box then your laptop. I had a similar problem where the laptop seemed to connect but in fact it wasn't authenticating, which meant no internet.

Also, can you ping your router? Start -> Run -> "cmd" enter -> ping 192.168.0.1 (or whatever IP your router is).

ok i tried "pinging" the router but that doesn`t seem to have made a difference.

how would i know if there was security on the router?

It looks to me as if you have problem of wireless setings - security settings set wrong. Guys in service have said it's fine because for their network they have set another set of settings together with firewall rules.
My advice: to check if there is any connection with your router turn off all firewall's and any security software on your PC then check the connection. If ti works then you have problem with those applications.
If it still doesn't work then go for wireless setup and set new settings for your router with appropriate security (i.e. if your router is password protected or has gotencryption, authentication ).
In addition you can check if your router has MAC checking turned on. If yes then your MAC address has to be added.
Check general settings for your router and set same connection settings on your PC.

If it still doesn't work.... give me a shout.

how would i check if MAC checking is on, and how would i add the MAC address?

It depends what's your router make. For example on my DrayTek it's in Wireless LAN Setup and then Access Control. In there is Enable/Disable Access Control, if I enable it then I have to add MAC address of each PC I'd like to have access to my network.
MAC address for your PC you should get by typing "ipconfig -all" in command line (I suppose you use Windows XP), MAC address is described as "Physical address" with 6 pairs of hexadecimal numbers. Those numbers should be then added to Access Control on your router if this option is enabled.

Give me your router's make and model then I'll be able to search for manual and then give you some help where to find these options.

If any problem, give me a shout.
P.S. Have you tried to turn off all security software on your PC and then connect to router ? Has this worked ?
Have you had any response after pinging router or was it "request timed out" ?

Try to reset your router, there should be a reset button. I had a problem with my router and reset it and went through the setup manual and it worked fine. also try restarting/rebooting the router when connecting to it via its own ip address on internet explorer. Manual setup is often the better way to set up the router once on the routers own web page too. If that makes any sence.

This solves problem only if the issue is related to router settings, this will not solve problems with wrong security settings on PC or wireless device itself.
But yes, this is good way to check at least one side of the connection.
