We had Norton and it didn't find the sasser virus which killed the computer.
We asked a chap who fixes them for a living and he uses Kaspersky anti-virus.
We did use the free ones for a time but they don't remove everything otherwise theres no incentive to get the paid for version (which they all seem to do)

We use avast which is free for home users - businesses have to pay for it!
Its been very good and detected a virus straightaway last week, which was good news - removed with no problems either!

Best out there would be either kaspersky or nod32
I use the latter as it came highly recommended, norton is known for problems id steer clear of it imo

I've seen recent tests of those applications and nod32 and Kaspersky were the best ones, both in speed and in accuracy. I'd recomend Kaspersky Internet Security 7 as it has complex computer security system (firewall, heuristic scan, privacy control, parent control, etc.).
I used many other programms but this one is one of the best.
Any questions, feel free to ask as I have KIS7 already installed.

I've not actually got an Anti Virus installed at the moment, but I normally use AVG as its free and I've never had any problems with it. Any virus I have had, which has been few and far between, its caught and deleted ASAP.

This AVG is it any good with a laptop:scratchchin:
Or will it slow it down

Any Anti virus will slow down a PC when its scanning as the hard drive is constantly being used ie reading, so it will slow down the loading process of anything you try and load..
In all honesty, I never notice the Anti Virus working and if its working properly, you shouldn't really 'see' it working anyway..
How people get so many problems with virus'es I'll never know!!

As I say, I dont actually have a anti virus installed, but I think it does really depend on where your going online...
I cant remember the last time I had a virus, but I always thought you only had a problems with getting a virus when you went to a dodgy site??
Anyways, just remember one thing, regardless of anti virus or not...
Backup your data and you'll have no problems at all. Whats the point in having all the DVD-RW's or blue ray or anything like that if you never use it?? The disc's are so cheap and easy to source you'd be silly to do anything but!! That way if the worst ever did happen (virus or hardware failing) you'd have a backup regardless
I've 4 hard drives, 2 for use and 2 for backup, I've yet to have a problem yet
Just a tip tho, make sure you know which one your copying too and then you wont loose the data your trying to back up
