Ive wanted a touch sreen for the car for a while, looking around at the market I tought about getting a double DIN screen rather than a motorised single DIN, as it looks a bit tidier in the dash, and should be easier to fit???
Being a big fan of Pioneer, that was the first place to look, but its like £1700 cause of the hard drive and sat nav built in.
So I found the Alpine: IVA-W200Ri can get it for about £540. Haven't had an alpine head unit for some years are they still good?

If I was going to spend that much I'd pay the bit extra for the Pioneer AVIC-HD1BT £1500

The price of the Pioneer AVIC-HD1BT hasn't changed for over a year now, perhaps it will with the introduction of the AVIC-D3. Still don't want to spend a grand really.
Just had a look at the AVIC-D3. Finally, a head unit that plays AAC files. Sweet!
This the one that tempts me though, a good price, plus I can use me Ipod:

I quite like the AVIC-D3. could pay the extra and have the hard drive..But an ipod does much the same thing...

Good point. just gotta decide is it really worth spending £1K compared to £550 on the Alpine:scratchchin:
How would the sat/nav work with the alpine?

I have always been a Very big fan of Alpine. at one point i had 3.5K of Alpine ICE. till the car was nicked and stripped.
I am the opposite to you and have never liked the Pioneer.
when i had all my ice, a friend had a VW sirocco with iirc over 5K of Pioneer Ice. and mine produced, musch cleaner and more precice sound than all of his.
while his system was installed by a professional ICE company all mine was done by myself and self tuned.
He was dissapointed to say the Least.
But i believe I have converted him to alpine. only problem is he has grown out of loud stereo's etc.
Oh i am referring to Final Legacy on here.
I had the same 4 amps and tons of speakers all Alpine really great sound. I then had a pioneer and found it ok but not as good as Alpine. I now have alpine again and thinking of going to pioneer....Think Alpine is the gear if you require amps and crisp loud music. Pioneer seem good straight from the box.

Subs are all about the enclousure. You can spend hundreds on them, but if they are in the wrong size enclousure, they sound sh*t. I used to have two 10" subs in boxs I made myself, and they were much lounder and crisper than a mate 12's in the crappy box that came with them.
In my last car I had a full Pioneer install still only using two 10's and was pumping out over 125db.
Was your mates a fibreglass install? My experiance of them is although they look great, you never get the sound quality.

How would the sat/nav work with the alpine?
You can attatch the Alpine: NVE-N099P - Navigation unit. Its not cheap at £730.
To be hones. i'm not overly bothered about Sat-Nav good old map reading never hurt anyone, or I can always borrow a Jane-Jane to send me the wrong way!!!

No, it was all done using boxes that were meant to be right for the Subs.
Mine i done the boot out in MDF and made my own enclosure, using a program i found online telling you how to calculate the volume of air. and sealed it all up with Tiger seal automotive pannel adhesive.
retrimmed in leatherette. looked and sounded great.

If you recall Derek my car had free air subs not boxed. It was mdf'ed, dynamatted thru out false floors /stealth shelves ect .I was always careful who i showed the stereo to but unfortunently for you, you showed the wrong people:mad0213: :mad0245: Still been there, done that hey Del! we;ve made our selves deaf in the process:z_what: and now as we got older :character0032: we try to lose a little weight from the car:jumps_rope: so to make it faster rather than adding half a tonne of stereo.:smile_46:

A good rule of thumb, I find for speaker boxes is the depth should be 1.5 x the diameter of the sub. This gives great sub and hits those really low notes.
The thicker the mdf the better, but obviously that is a weight issue. Which I why I haven't loaded my car with all the kit i've got at home, however tempting it may be!!!
