I just got another laptop and want to install the BT voyager modem I have for the original one onto it so I can use both on the internet. I tried to install it with the disc but it keeps failing.
Should be able to install it....I quite often have a few laptops and the home PC running of the BT Hub.

I tried that mate and it still seems to quit on me, probably something to do with the firewall on the laptop. I'll sort it when I get back.

Is it a wireless connection or a wired connection?
Wireless can be annoying to set up and make it properly secure, but with a wired network, its a case of leave everything to auto, put a cable in and job done. Surfing the net
Depending on Router used, the firewalls are pretty damn good and I've never used any other firewalls (software based anyways) not even the one in Windows.
Use a site called shields-up to test how 'protected' you on for attackers. I think that gives you a good start should there be a particular weakness in what your using.

Found out the problem, it kept asking for a install disc with everything that I pulgged into the usb ports, even a mouse, so took it to the computer services bloke out here and he re-built my laptop and re-installed everything. Works fine now so will get it on the net when I get home. Gonna get a wireless connection for the house too. What does that involve buying etc?

If you have broadband you only need a Router and a Wireless card for your laptop
if not on broadband uograde and you should get a free router. even AOL give out routers now, and good ones at that.
although i am with BT i know people on AOL, just do not phone their customer services.

I already got a wireless card with my laptop so just need one with the other one at home. I've been told to get a wireless connector that plugs into the USB port as it works better than the card. Apparently they come with a wireless set from pc world at around £50

With the system asking for disc's thats because hardware was there that Windows XP didnt have drivers for. This is where the orignal drivers come in dead handy  If you had given a shout, we could have searched them out as long as we knew what make/model the laptop was and then sent them on a CD to you  One for next time perhaps
Personally Steve I wouldnt use wireless internet at all, but mainly for me its down to the security of it. I just dont like the idea of someone being outside my house and able to try and tap into the network..
Its been done in London and I think down one street alone, there was 20 odd houses without the proper protection needed. Even with the protection in place, I still dont fancy it..
Anyways, soap box over...
What do you need ??
What have you got?? If you have the wireless card, then you'll need a wireless router.
Personally for me, anything networking related, I'd go for Netgear stuff. I've used it ever since I've had a network at home (upto 8 PC's at once!!) and I've never had any issues
I think the wireless ones start from around £50 and go up to however much you want to pay.. Then just make sure you've got good security installed on the laptop so that people cant get in... I dont think there's anything else...
I'm unsure how fast USB is compared to PCMICA cards, but I know with the wired connections I have here at home, I'd never use USB for a network

It was a problem with the USB driver, it was corrupt or something as the guy said. Even if i used the install disc then it still wouldnt accept anything. After he re-built it it was ok. I can use any hardware that doesnt need a disc now unlike before. Mouse, external memory etc.
Thanks for the advice on wireless phil. I'll look into it all when I get home, see whats about and all.

more than likely the drivers are meant for win xp and not vista

I would second that... incompatable drivers......
you should be able to get the drivers from AOL for it...... or iirc bt

Failing the drivers a router is the answer. You dont need software for it to work and its very plug and play type thing.
Depending on what you want (wired or wireless) prices start from about £25 to £30 or so I think (for a single connection..)
Would recommend the Netgear DG834 V2 (its wired, they do a wireless version) and it comes with firewall, switch (4 ports to connect upto 4 PC's) and its never let me down.

i have the wireless version and would agree it's a cracking modem, i went through two other brands as they both went wrong
Btw don't bother using wireless it's a mare with any connection

I wouldnt recommend any of my customers to go wireless because of my biggest fear, security
But plently of people do, but its not for me  I like to be able to plug in my cables and see what and who's where!! :hysterical:

Don't touch Belkin, I'm on my third (free, via warrantee) replacement and about to switch to a Netgear. The Belkin just kept breaking.
Personally, using a passworded wireless router connection with encryption is enough security. If someone is talented enough to get through that then they can probably get through a wired router too via the net. Can't be doing with wires stretched across the room, gets in the way of the missus when she's hoovering!
