it is called a Router.

what make is it? who is your Isp.

Has he read the instructions, as in the book it will give you an I.p address to enter, this will put you into the router config settings.

In their you need to enter details relevent to your ISP. Inc your username & Password.

It does not connect in the same way as a Broadband Modem. it is a Permanent connection to the Web.

I could do it but i am a bit far away.

what make or Router is it?

In fact if you call your ISP and tell them you have just bought the router, and ask for config settings.

They will help.

I bought a cheap one the other week. It was so easy to install. Had to install software first then connect it up. Conected it up and it was running. The software done every thing for me really

Ed simple and easy to set up a router mate :)

Simply 'dial' into the router (should be an address of some sorts, like 192.168.0.1) and then it might ask for a username and password (which would be a default thing like, admin, and password for example) and then you'll have to put in your username, password for YOUR INTERNET connection, ie the one you sign in with? Then just leave the IP addresses to the ISP to sort, so basically, use AUTO and then save the information you've put in and job done :)

You might need to setup different things for your emails, firewalls etc, but it should be fairly straight forward mate... Even I can do it!!

any grief, shout me over MSN and I will see if I can sort you out ;)

Depends on the router Bob.. Mine being a Netgear I had to sort that out myself. so it might be the problem... Without being in front of it, its a little hard to know what the problem is :(

If you know your username and password for your isp, I will sort it for you. If you do not know , I will give up now.

It depends on how the router is to set up... Might be completely different to the Netgear model, which sounds like it is!!

Netgear is self config. Belkin is so user friendy. as long as you know your log on.

It does have an auto detect mode, but if you know what your doing, then its easier to input the data yourself...
I know mind wasnt self config...

I have the paperwork in front me now for the new Belkin.

1/install The software you get progress screen, next the wizard will examine your network settings
2/ connect the cable from your modem to the green port on the router
next
conect the blue cable to any blue port in router the other end to your network card in the computer.
next
The wizard will check connection and determine what type of internet connection you have
next
If you have a connection type that requires a user name and password the wizard will ask you to type that in.
next
the wizard will transfer configuration do not switch off router it will take about a min. the router restarts itself.
next wizard checks internet connection. a few mins.
next
the light on router will be green indicating internet connection
finish

Thats ok if you know what you are doing. I baby sat Bob when he set his up. Bob done it all, Bob said that was easy. I think some of the words that Belkin use are a bit off putting. If you have never done it before.
