If you suspect the maf, unplug it with the car running.
If it doesn't immediatley stall, you have a maf problem.
If it does then the problem probably lies elsewhere.

First sign is usually as Lou says fluctuating tickover.
Then do as Olly sugests. (MAF test).

Do not run the car on boost if you think you have MAF problem.

Think it was a **** covered idle sensor.

Surging tickover is a sure sign, but the most worrying is when the car feels OK but leans out at high revs, due to the MAF sensor producing a low voltage. Very difficult to spot this until .....BANG!

Needs a tuner with the right diagnostics to see this.

SO if you think you have a problem I suggest you get it looked at

The screws that hold the MAF in are the allen type just undo them pull the Maf out and replace.. It is straight forward.

They're safety Torx screws.

A right **** if you haven't got the right bit. Buy a set mate.

Then just unscrew 2 screws. Slide old one out and new one in. Do up, plug in and go!

I did mine on Ashburton motor works forecourt. 2 minute job!

We done Ed's at Powerstation well removed mine and give it to Ed as his was U/S. Course the mechanics have all the right tools there.
I liked the way mine was removed fitted into Ed's and I was handed the broked one. Had to fit the bloody thing myself and I have given up mechanics on cars...:hysterical: :hysterical:

If its running ok then its probably ok.
Do you have the ecu connectors under the dash?
You could check the fault codes.

Maf's are a weak spot on the Scoobs. The my99-00 being the worst. I have seen MAF's last for years on some cars others go every month or two.
It seems filters that require oiling can cause the MAF to coat with cooked oil and become US. Induction kits that req oil are also a cause. Vibration has also been sugested.
I have also been told by a very good mapper that Dump valve VTA are not MAF friendly.

my MAF has just gone, due to a piperx IK being fitted!!! the problem is that I have to travel to work 60 miles round trip daily and couldnt get it booked into the garage until next thursday, so i reckon that I will have travelled about 500 miles by the time it gets fixed, so the engine damage could be a concern !!! Its under warranty thats why I have to wait ..... does anyone know how it would cause damage??? as I may have to take this issue up with garage who couldnt book me in for a week..... thanks

It will not damage the car if you keep it off boost. At high boost the car could run weak and engine can go BANG. Keep it off boost and no harm will come to it.
