View Full Version : What Petrol Do you use?

After the trip to castle coombe i have decided to find out what petrol everyone uses and what they think of it.
would you use anything else if you could? If so What?
The reason for this is, on the way up, a trip of 120 miles, of all motorway / Dual Caridgeway. using BP ultimate 97 ron fuel it cost me £55 doing a steady 80/85
by the time i got to coombe i was out of fuel, and the only petrol station in the area, was expensive and they only sold 95 ron. so i only put in £10
when i left coombe i went through Bath and put in another £30 of super 97 ron, in a esso station.
this time i went back a longer routh and manegd to do 173 miles and its just in the red. ont the £40 that i had put in. I was averaging again 80/85 no difference in driving style. but i got a lot better consumption.
Is it possible BP's fuel is that Bad i cannot get very good
MPG?

May be that body kit's creating alot of drag or you had the wind behind you going home:hysterical:
I mostly use BP ultimate as the garage is closest to home. Also it is supposed to give a better mid-range than Optimax which should be better for road driving. I do occasionally use optimax but have not noticed any real difference in consumption.(your's must be horrendous by the way).

optimax,always...
Always try and stick to optimax.I get this at J27 M5, £1.03.9 a litre though  . I did newbury and back in april, a round trip of roughly 250 miles, economy driving at 80 mph. the needle showed just under 1/4 tank. I got another 15 miles of local B roads before a refill was in order. We also have Esso 97ron and BP ultimate within 2 miles.

But thats in my clio of course:smile:
If you have lots of Optimax garages in your area I'd proabably stick that in all the time...will definately help your engine run well.
tesco have got a 99ron fuel out soon so should be intresting to see what that is like

Tesco's 99 ron has been around for quite a While. only in our area Tesco only sells 95 Ron, when i asked why they told me their is no market for a higher grade fuel in this area.
In barnstaple we have 4 BP 3 actual Bp Stations and 1 Sainsburys which uses Bp fuel.
2 Esso however both have a Slope to get back out of, i could get in, but not back out, as id loose my front Bumper.
1 Tesco not sure what fule they use. but No 97 ron.

I USED OPTIMAX FOR A LONG TIME COMBINED WITH WYNN'S OCTANE BOOST AND VALVE SEAT PROTECTOR AND FOUND IT WAS OK, BUT AS STATED BEFORE USED BP ULTIMATE WITH THE SAME ADDITIVE AND GOT A BETTER RESPONSE FROM THAT BOTH MID RANGE AND TOP END, FUEL ECONOMY LITTLE BIT BETTER, BUT I DONT HAVE A SCOOB FOR THE MPG - JUST THE THRILL OF THE OOOOSH AS THE LEAD FOOT DROPS - A TANKFUL WILL AVERAGE ABOUT 200 MILES OF STEADY DRIVING....ULTIMATE IS JUST SO BL***Y EXPENSIVE THOUGH....DAMMNED RIP OFF BRITAIN POLITICS / GOV TAXES - NO LEAD IN MY FUEL - JUST THE RIGHT BOOT!!!!

Shell Optimax all the time.
Switched over to SO about 3 months ago. The difference is marginal but noticeable over a 4-6 week period, better pick up mid-range, and slight reduction in lag. Wouldn't put anything-else in it now. I go as far as planning my petrol stops around Shell garages using
http://www.shell.com/home/PlainPageServlet?FC=/uk-en/html/iwgen/shell_for_motorists/service_stations/app_station_finder.html
sad I know, but thats the difference it makes!
240 miles to the tank long and short driving but del its down hill all the way back to north devon from anywhere every time i went to wales with the dragon allways got better mpg on the way home

My car is mapped on Shell Optimax and it's the only fuel I'll use.
Just about all well know tuners recommend using Optimax as it seems to offer the best protection against detonation. That said, I'd imagine that a car running it a nigh on standard condition, you be hard pressed to notice any real difference.
I tried some Tesco 99 in my 04 STi PPP and on a rolling road day I suffered problems with my advanced multiplier refusing to go above 13(16 being the highest available figure). Despite Mike Wood from Prodrive using DeltaDash on his laptop and resetting the ECU, the AM refused to go above 13.
I ran the car low on fuel and 2 tanks of Optimax and things were back to normal on an the same rolling road 4 days later( weather condtions/temperature were the same on both days btw).
Because of this I stick with Optimax, esp on the Spec C. Off course it could have been a duff batch, but if I ever Have to put in another fuel type because of availability, I use very little boost.

Well I use Sainsburys fuel, I average 75mph up the motorway and I can get 200 miles on half a tank, no lie... I average 30mpgs at the moment up and back to Trudi's... I love the power of my car, but also love the consumption :)
As I cant get Optimax, I wont put it in. Only ever used Sainsburys since the fuel went through the roof as I flattly refuse to pay over £1 a litre for fuel...
Oh here's a pic of my tank half full with just under 185miles on the clock ;)

Its true all fuel do come from a few places but its whats done to the fuel before it hits the pumps... If it was all the same do you not think trading standards would have heard about it? Test done on fuel from the pumps do show a great differance.

I've heard the same said of Oil. I don't know if it's true or a fair representation though. For me, Sainsburys Super (97) and a three point bottle of octane boost intended to treat 50litres means that I get 40litres of good 100 RON for a grand total of approx £35. I'd recommend anyone else do the same unless they do a track day in which case I'd put optimax (98) plus a millers four point booster (but I have no cat to worry about destroying) so the engine burns a bit cooler and reduces knock even further.

Amen.
In the Plymouth area, go see Carl Sorensen at Sorensen Road Sport in Faraday Mill Industrial Estate. He stocks different octane boost products according to your requirements (cat, no cat, street, track). Or call him on 01752 603500
Note: Sainsburys Super (BP 97) plus a 3 point octane boost is 100RON for less money than optimax. It's a no-brainer for street use.

you sure are, u need to add octane booster.
knock is not always detectable, without det cans.
it is visible with a knock link though, noticed a big difference with mine when i checked the knock level on the Apexi.
with octane booster, i had 23 -25 on the knock without any, i had 68-83
which is bad, but i could not hear any knock.

V-Power is 99RON whereas Optimax was 98. V-Power came onto the scene after I made my original posting, therefore I don't feel too much like a hippocrite in saying "God damnnit Earl, that v-power is good sheeoot". Mind you, rumour has it that for the first week or so, the V-Power we were all getting was 102 RON. Something to do with cleaning out the Optimax additives or something. Like I say, rumour. I don't know how much truth is in that. But v-power made my scooby go like fark.

I'm intrigued by talk of using OB. Surely, if you are running any sort of Scoob 'as manufactured' you don't need to boost the octane, do you? Or am I missing something?
to be short yes jap imports are mapped standard to run on 100ron octane best you can get over here is 99 if running 97 super you need to be running octane booster as the lower the octane rating the earlier it explodes therefore causing pre detonation or knock which will knock out the big end bearings in no time hope this helps
i disagree one bottle millers 3.00quid in with 40ltrs makes 0.07pence per litre extra still a bargain in my book compared with 91.5pence per litre

I read (yes I can read) an article on a bench test of UK available fuels the other day
They set up an engine and dyno'd it using supermarket 95,BP Ultimate, Tescos 99 and the old Optimax 98
The only changes they made to the set ups were the adjustments to the ignition timing to allow for det
The cheap 95 got about 400hp
Tescos99 got 430ish
Bp Ultimate got 460ish
Optimax got nearly 500

Being an old EA engine, the truck runs on coal!!
The leggy isn't to fussed, but does tend to prefer shell 95 to most.
97 only in the WRX, Shell if we can get it, but we don't have any local to us.
