is the smell coming from the front or back of the car?

if its from the front it may be power steering fluid as that can smell quite strangeother than that could you provide any more information

Um iam not sure cos we could only smell it when we were in the car and reversing it in the garage,it was coming into to the car so we could smell it! smelt like it could be comin in from the front! sorry to sound so vague!!! Its the first time we have smelt it,at first graham thought it could be like an electric burn out smell but i could smell something more like a kind of exhaust emission!
He took it out an half hour ago for a run and came back and said it didnt smell this time!??

are you running rich?

When I reverse into my garage sometimes there is a odd smell from my car I think it has something to do with the cat.
Or check underneath to make sure theres not a Tesco's bag or the like melted to the pipe I had that happen once to a previous car and it stank for weeks until it burnt off.

Oh right well we dont have a cat!!haha!! naughty i know!
There is nothing stuck on the pipe!

i think it may be that you`ve boiled the power steering fluid. when you went out earlier and it smelt had it been driven for a long time?

and i would hope its running rich, they should all be i thought

Oh right thanks!!
Um well friday evening we drove it for quite a while, but we have before!
Then when we parked it in the garage last night it stunk!
And then this morning after it had been polished we started it up to move it out of the garage and we could smell it again,so graham took it out earlier for 10 minutes and when he came back he said the smell had gone!

if its been out for quite a while then its more likely to smell as it will have been used more. A ten minute drive may not get the fluid warm enough.

have you checked the fluids?

this is what i think it is but i`m sure one of the more technical minded members will be on the site later on this evening/tomorrow and will be able to provide alternatives

Oh right thanks!!
Ill see what they think,i dont think its much to worry about,it hasnt been used for a while as we had problems starting it a few months ago,and now its back in use!
Plus it has had a new bottom end and only done 3k since.

if it hasn`t been used much recently it may just be burning damp/water off the top of the engine etc. from where its been raining so heavy.

also while i remember check on top of the intercooler as i found a dead bat that had been sucked in through the scoop on mine once and it absolutely stank

Hopefully it won`t be anything major though and good luck.

Could be oil from your rocker covers.....when the drivers side one leaks it'll drop oil onto the up-pipe which is hot and it'll make quite a smell.

Have you noticed any fumes/smoke from the engine area or from the scoop?

Hi Neil!
I havent looked or noticed any fumes or smoke from the engine area but when he gets back ill get him to have a look, all i can tell you till he gets back is that there was a horrible and different smell when we used it fri/sat.i could smell it through the air vents inside so guess it may be coming from the engine?!couldnt smell it at all fri when we were out only when it was beinng reversed into the garage.
