I was looking at a Turbo, on a 1999 subaru, and it looks like the number is a VF 29
i have not heard of a VF 29 is this correct?
if so which is best a TDO5 or the VF 29 it looks Quite small.
I have been offered the complete engine, it has gos a small tap from the bottom end when it gets hot.
whats the whole thing going to be worth?

mmm, not sure, everyone seems to upgrade from a TD05
but what would be a good upgrade is the VF 29 any good?
if not how much do you recon i can get for it and the engine?
Just found this
http://aolsearch.aol.co.uk/redir?urn=http://www.powerlabs.org/swappedimpreza.htm&url=http://www.powerlabs.org/swappedimpreza.htm&requestId=466bf157c660ad28&clickedItemRank=3&source=google&searchType=MS&partner=google&query=IHI%20Turbo%20VF%2029
And this
IHI turbo.
The VF series (VF22, VF23, VF24, VF29, VF30) are the most common direct replacement turbos. All VF-series turbochargers use the same roller bearing, water-cooled core assembly. The differences are in their wheels and housings to achieve different flows.
The VF22 has the largest potential for peak horsepower. In other words, in the IHI model range, the VF 22 supports the highes boost levels. It is capable of running up to 25 psi. Because it is a roller bearing turbo, turbo lag is minimal...the boost comes on around 3300 rpm. Expect to max out the VF22 somewhere in the 400-450 hp range.
The VF23 starts the middle ground. It comes on boost around 3100 rpm and is capable of running 20 psi of boost. Expect to max out the VF23 somewhere in the 300-350 hp range.
The VF 24 starts to come on around 2900 rpm and will significantly improve power through the midrange over the stock TD04 turbo. However, the VF 24 is only capable of running around 17 psi.
The VF23 and VF 24 are a great replacement for those who value drivability higher than maximum power.
The VF29 & VF30 delivers a very wide increase in torque over the standard TD-series turbos. It is important to note that the VF30 is not a roller bearing turbo.
A new high performance modified IHI turbo has made its way to the market recently. They are the Power Enterprises PE 1818 and the 1820. The 1818 supposedly comes on boost extremely fast...which make it great for road racing or aggressive driving (remember to be responsible :^). The 1818 maxes out somewhere between 350-375 hp.
The 1820 is larger than the 1818 and is capable of running more boost, but at the expense of more turbo lag. Expect it not attain full boost until you have passed 4000 rpm. However, it can be tuned to 400+ hp.
As this is a Front entry, how can i make it fit a top entry car?
Thanks
Derek
samco do a 90 degree bend for that modification round about £55

Mines a front entry VF28, with a 90 degree bit of samco.
I would assume its very similiar to a VF29 (only one number away)
Vf's are roller bearing and TD's are steel. VF's will spool up faster (size for size) but the TDo5 hybrids seem to be the turbo's of choice for good stong power at a good price. My Tdo5 on the 2 litre was quite laggy at 285bhp @1.1bar
yeah my td05 is pretty laggy and quite hard to keep in the boost range on twisty roads the rev range has to be kept at around 4500 - 5000 rpm to get a good response.
i think the 20 or 16 g is the way forward

Have to agree...the TD05 was pretty laggy on my old import.

On the RA the lag is not noticable, due to the high reving all the time.
i just want some more accelleration.

you mention lag then talk about the 20G, go for the power.
but the 20g is not as laggy as the standard td05 is it???

it basically says the TD05 is good for high end power.
I want bottom end power, may try for a VF 23 from what i have read.
