simple ways to speed up pc is
1.defrag
2.get rid of programs not being used, and stop ones running if not needed, you can tell if they are running as there is usauly an icon on the bottom right of your screen.
3. more ram, you will have to find out what type you have and if your motherbord can take any more.
4. faster processor again you need to see if your motherboard can take it and you will probably have to flash the bios, and maybe get a better fan, i have afew processors lyig about, if its quite old you might find some peeps have upgraded and may have what you need.
5. sometimes just refortmatting gets ride of all the rubbish and takes its back to what you had at start but remember to save all your data to disk or portabol hard drive.
6. there are other programs on the market that will speed it up a bit by cleaning your registery etc but really you are better doing 1 and 2 first.
7. if its a laptop then its slightly harder as they do seem to slow down over time and formatting seems to be the only solution.
8. oh also get rid of temp files and history etc. in internet options general,
hope this helps and there is a school of thought that leaving a pc on permenant is better for it apart from the envoromental thing.

one last thing mate, norton anti virus is heavy on the processor power, its good but eats up speed and power, so sometimes better to go with a free one in old pcs
