at the moment computer has no icons taskbar or anything. have managed to get onto the internet via task manager. anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like fun, no real answers though, sorry. Rebooted already i'm sure...

No icons on the desktop?

right click on the desktop and hoover over arrange icons, see if the show desktop icons is ticked, if not, tick it and your icons should come back :)
As for the taskbar, simply right click on the taskbar and go to the taskbar options. Simply check if that is ticked also.

If none of the above works, please give me a shout again :)

have tried right clicking on the desktop but nothing happens! no menu comes up or anything as for the taskbar that is the same problem can`t access that either. any other ideas would be much appreciated. also, what is needed to reboot the system and how do you do it?

Right mate, if you could please attach an image of your desktop that might give me some idea.
do what I have done below and hopefully we can sort something out for you :)

I've resized it to fit the forum's size :smile:
to do this, hit prt scr on your keyboard, go to paint and paste the image into that and then upload that image to somewhere like imageshack or something and give me the url to have a look or failing that, email me direct so I can see the problem...

If NO menu is coming up like the above, then I would guess something has been messed with in the windows settings or even worse, in the registery...

To reinstall windows is simple, just before you do that, let me know, because there are steps you will need to follow to save headaches and swearing tantrems :smile:

don`t know what has happened but without myself or my brother doing anything its all back!!!! this morning it wouldn`t even bring up the menu screen though

got the same problem again. my scrren looks similar to the one that phill posted BUT i cannot get an options menu.

So you dont have the "show desktop icons" there mate?

if i right click on the mouse it does nothing, i just have a blank blue screen with no icons or anything! and the only way i`m on the net is by starting new tasks in windows task manager!

Then start a new task called Explorer and see if that helps mate.. Other than that, me thinks it could be a call for a complete reinstall but only AFTER you have backed up your data to CD-R or DVD-R...

Maybe a virus or something has got into the system and taken something out, or failing that, someone playing about with the settings in the msconfig 'screen' and turning things off...
