Sorry but just not my cup of tea.....I've seen these style discs on mountainbikes for a long time and never liked them....as for making up stuff about weight saving I think the savings are going to be minimal.

I recently bought some tar-ox g88 40 grooved discs and pads..seem good so far but a little noisy on heavy braking.

Tar OX are supposed to be good

I've also found you get incresed noise when using grooved discs

I was recommended by a couple of friends with scoobies to get the tar-ox discs, i'm still waiting to put my braided brake lines on and bleed them and see what they are like then.

I also found on my old gt turbo which had drilled discs that they got noisy when braking hard but the noise these grooved discs make is quite annoying..still as long as it stops me quickly i dont mind! :party0040:

The grooved AP's I'm running do make a little noise, but it really isn't a lot. You can really only notice it under reeaallyy heavy braking. On the major plus side I've had no problems with the pads glazing at all, which was a constant nightmare with the Brembo's. I'd recommend blind grooved/drilled discs, but not complete drill discs. The are far more likely to fail. EBC's or Black Diamonds for reasonbly priced good aftermarket discs. Talk to Carl Sorensen.

Black Diamond do fully drilled discs...was thinking of getting a pair but not sure wether they are at risk from cracking or not.

Yeah mate...was thinking of Tar-ox drilled discs....not the combo ones just drilled for a bit more cooling.

It's not a heavy car so doesn't need massive brakes for normal road use:smile:

I've tried...

Geforce. Cracked em....

Drilled Big brakes. Discs and rotors. Cracked em..

EBC turbo grooves and EBC redstuff ceramics. Cracked em....

I've now got Evosport discs and OMP pads which I have to say I think are probably crap but they haven't cracked yet.....

I've got to go on the car, DBA 4000 discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads...

I know that you looking to just replace the discs but FWIW if you want good stopping power and reliability, spend the money and uprate the brakes. BTW I've got some gold Brembos in the garage...

Neil G
24-03-2006, 10:04 40
I'm going for Brembo HC discs (undrilled/slotted) and Ferodo pads.

EBC discs and pads on one of my old cars actually made the brakes worse...like I had dropped some oil/grease on the braking surface:eek: EBC pads were okay on the Subaru though so I suppose it depends on the car as it had cooling ducts for the brakes which must help matters.

J_K
24-03-2006, 11:51 00
Personally....

I'd never buy EBC again..

After some fiasco's I had with the green stuff pads early on I swore I'd never touch EBC again..
But I did.
And got burned again!!

Neil G

I used EBC on my WRX and they seemed okay but TBH the brakes on that weren't great anyway and I'm not that hard a driver so don't get through parts quickly.

I have heard some bad reports regarding EBC stuff including the discs

Dspeed
24-03-2006, 19:47 11
My system is braided lines red stuff disks and pads and is v noisy under heavy braking but dont notice it normally.

i've just fitted black diamond discs and predator pads to the REAR of mine
got them for £160 inc. delivery :)
seem ok so far.
up front i've got the godspeed 335mm disc conversion with ferodo ds2500 pads, they are awesome . cost iirc about £550 on a group buy but certainly do the job :)
try motormania for black diamond ;)

ps , i had the EBC turbo grooved discs with ceramic pads all round - - never again
oh,and don't get drilled as they are prone to cracking

How come I see many a Mercedes & Porsche with drilled discs...are the aftermarket ones just s**t or the design?

scoobyDAZZA
29-03-2006, 14:48 58
it's down to the heat generated neil , know what yer saying though bud

obviously if you don't go on track days then drilled will be fine
but then again,it's only for looks innit ;)

Porsche disks are £600 a pair.. These are designed not to crack from hole to hole guess thats why they cost so much. The normal aftermarket disks are just drilled and weaken the disks.

Neil G
29-03-2006, 22:42 49
Thanks Bob...that is kinda what I was thinking....a lot of aftermarket stuff is obviously designed to look the part but may turn out to actually be sub-standard.

I'm going for plain Brembo discs when my OE ones are shot...£60 a pair too which is nice:smile:

bob

I have the Brembo grooved Disks. These seem very good no warping and I do hit the brakes from 140-150 quite hard. Get a slight noise from the grooves as they clean the pads at over 130 mph but under that they are like normal disks.

29-03-2006, 23:10 33

As for Porsche brakes, the brakes do fail for a passtime, according to a porker owning friend, especially the ceramics on the turbo s and they are lots and lots and lots of beer tokens. Apparently you expect to change them every year and no they are not covered by the waranty.

Neil G
30-03-2006, 13:38 23
Quite weighty cars so I suppose they are heavy on the brakes.

Im on the verge on getting some black diamond pads and discs for the front of my car
before i get them any more ideas about them
they gonna be ok??

scoobyDAZZA
19-04-2007, 23:52 56
Kris

i have them on the back and they're fine
but
a friend put them on the front of his 260 bhp uk classic and hated them
consider tar-ox

remember 80% of the braking is done by the fronts, certainly worth splashing out that bit extra

Broxi
20-04-2007, 00:03 51
I had them on my Cav Turbo on all 4 corners. they were Very good.

Have had Tarox on an RS Turbo and found them Very Good also.

I have Tried EBC discs on an Impreza, and Wont use them Again.

I have also fitted some of the Discs on Ebay, that have the Grooves. fitted these on 3 impreza's and everyone is Extremly happy with Them.

These seem to me to be STD discs, that they have modified on a Lathe.
But i do think they have been done Very well, and give a good performance.

I will be going for these for my own.

what was so bad with the black diamond?
iv got a scoobyworld cat at home and i dont thing the tar-ox are much more so i will have a look at them then

you won't find the black diamond any better than the STD ones up front

and i totally 100% agree with Derek about EBC
never again............................

if i ever went back to a standard size then i'd certainly get the tar-ox

I have had them all

Standard Subaru's and Brembo's and now AP's and I tell you what, I've got nothing bad to say about the AP's bar the price.. The Brembo's, make sure you've wheels that fit otherwise, you'll need spacers or new wheels (your choice..) Had wheel wobble for some reason with my Brembo's, thought it was because of the crap spacers... Never had chance to put on the spacers as I had the AP's fitted and my god, they are sodding awesome  Very pricy, but worth it

Brembo's seemed much better with upgraded pads and disc's on, had DVA 4000 grooved disc's (£300 pair) and then Freodo DS2500 pads on them. Much better bite, but nothing quite like the AP's

Roll on getting the rear AP's fitted

Oh and EBC's?? Was told when I mentioned I had them on a Rover Coupe Turbo, that the gent wouldnt use them on a push chair... Umm I thought, no wonder my Dad seems to have warped 2 pairs of them... I went with Black Diamond disc's and pads I think, great combination  Wouldnt ever touch EBC's again, ever...

Hi there,
My Type R Classic Scoob brakes are rubbish- there are standard discs on mintex pads.

Do i fit the Brembos of a late scoob to the front and the back.
Or the Godspeed 335mm Front conversion Kit to the front and the brembos to the back with Godspeeds fitting kit?

http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/Subaru/subaru.htm

Any ideas welcomed cos i am sure confused which would be better? Or have i missed an alternative?

Thanks
