I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.
So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:
Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type
Any mods
Type of use (road/track)
Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)
What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?
I hope this will help and become a useful thread

My recommendation for your car is 5w-40 synthetic.
Depending on quality required, look at the following in the Members area of my website.
Motul 8100 5w-40
Motul 300V 5w-40
Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40
Silkolene Pro S 5w-40

Hi there!!
Would you be able to recommend oil for my Subaru?
Make is Impreza WRX
Year 2000
2.0 turbo
Prodrive performance pack
I'm just going to have an oil change done next week, and the garage are using a shell oil.. I think it maybe ultra... but not sure!! semi synthetic.... thats what they recommend!
Just wondering if it should be fully synthetic?? they are a subaru dealer so I would hope they know what they are doing lol!!
Thanks Andy

Hi,
We recomend a 5w-40 full synthetic as the top option, the Shell Helix is in fact a mineral based oil but will be fine.
You can use a semi 10w-40 but it is the basic option and not ideal if the car is used with spirit.
Cheers
Guy.
Hi Simon, there are three Shell Hilix grades,
Shell helix is mineral (yellow "can")
Shell helix plus is a "semi-synth" in a blue can
Shell Helix Ultra Pluis is a "fully synth" and is in a grey can.
Cans are plastic btw.
A lot of dealers use this, the most used is the Plus followed by the Ultra.
I use the Ultra myself, its a 5-40, brought my oil temps down by 9-10 degrees when I changed and I back to backed it three times to be sure.
Normal driving, drag racing and spirited driving for 24,000 miles now on it and no issues.
You still doing the Motul 5-40, how would that compare to the Ultra ? be interested in trying next change, tried the Sylkolene and it muddied up to quickly for my liking.
compliments of the season by the way
cheers

Hi
Just about to do engine oil change and somebody recommended Castrol-Edge 0w-30
What do you think?
Make:Subaru
Model:Impreza WRX
Eng:2.0 Turbo
Year:1994
Road use only (tho tend to over do it sometimes, only at night mind)
Only mod...Exhaust
Hi, thats not suitable, you should go for a 5-40 as a minimum, Shell helix Ultra works v well, Sylkolene pro S, Motul M300, Millers 10-40, all these are high quality fully synthetics, the problem with the Castrol is its 0-40, as mentioned too thin.
I'm currently using the Motul 5-40, seems fine and just as good temperature wise as the Shell. Suggest contacting Opie for that.
best regards

Hi,
For your Impreza we would recomend a 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use.
Brand wise, have a look at the ester based Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 and the Motul 300v.

Sadly the 5w-40 from castrol is not a true synthetic, its a hydrocracked mineral one. I would look to change it around 5-6,000 miles. A good quality true synthetic like the silkolene and motul up to 10,000 miles.

If you have semi synthetic in the car already can you change it to fully synthetic??
ie i was told not to mix the oils??
huxley
26-09-2007, 18:27 15
Never use fully synthetic in a scooby gearbox, ap motors said i picked up some gearbox whine after she was filled with silkolene sylktran 75w 90.
Castrol syntrax all the way, ask anyone at scoobynet 9/10 folks all use the stuff as i now do.
Probably to do with synthetic being too slippery to be picked up by the synchros.

Never use fully synthetic in a scooby gearbox
.
I wouldnt agree with that in that way.
On some, usually older and import boxes the high grade synthetics have been to slippy for the synchro, the use of a mineral based gear oil grips the synchro better, all this shows is wear on the synchros, nothing to do with the oil as there are more happy on synthetic then there are who arent.

Hi,
1998 2ltr sport impreza wagon
road use only but quite heavily used and loadsa miles!!!
Not sure what oils been in it..can u recomend a good one and can I flush the engine and use synthetic despite the fact it could of had mineral oil in?
oilman
25-09-2008, 22:02 09
No need for a flush, does not matter what it has been run on previously. Good quality synthetic, regular changes and it will have all the cleaning it needs.
I would go 5w-40 synthetic unless modified, best of these ester based synthetics. Have a look at Motul, Silkolene and redline here http://www.opieoils.co.uk

Hi,
For the engine we would recommend a good 5w-40 synthetic, if you want the best for protection and performance look at the ester based Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300v and the Redline http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-835-ester-synthetic.aspx
For the gearbox and diff the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-850-silkolene-silktran-syn-5-75w-90-fully-synthetic-gear-oil.aspx

Hi,
If the car is used hard then I would go for the ester based Silkolene Pro S 10w-50, not the cheapest but well worth it and well proven http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1145-silkolene-pro-s-10w-50-ester-synthetic-oil-for-high-performance-engines.aspx

Have a look at the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 or the Mobil 5w-50 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-647-engine-oils.aspx

Pro S can be cheaper in the long run as it lasts so long. Cheaper stuff will break down quicker and won't give the protection of Pro S anyway. As far as ester based oils go, it's pretty much the cheapest anyway.

Hi still giving oil recommendations,
What engine oil for a standard 2005 wrx and what's the best or are they all the same?
I generaly spend a bit to try and get the best when buying things, and what's peoples thoughts about magnetic sump plugs?

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
Out of those, the best ones are the Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Gulf Formula G, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.
Magnetic sump plugs are okay, we were going to get them, but the prices were silly for a lot of them, and in the end they are just a magnetised bolt

Go for a 10w-50
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx
Both are really good oils, but if you like the Millers, go with that.
For the gearbox, go for the Motul Gear 300, Silkolene Silktran Syn 5, Castrol Syntrax or Millers CRX 75w-90 NT. The Syn 5 is ideal for the diffs
