Bit of a duel poll but same subject.

As far as cyclists go....

1) Does the majority make the minority look bad or the minority to the majority respectively?

And...

2) Should Cyclists do a riding test and have valid MOT, Tax and Insurance?

I think I am more worried about all the car drivers with no MOT, tax and insurance.

Not entirely clear what you are getting at here but in my experience, myself included, most cyclists are competant and obey the highway code. It's the minority who jump traffic lights and/or pavements (switching from road users to pedestrians as it suits them). We only ever note or hear about the latter minority. No one ever comments on a sensible cyclist, just as no one ever comments on good driving, only bad.

As for MOT, tax, insurance:

Riding test - yes, absolutely. If you're going to cycle on the public road, you should demonstrate a minimum competance level and working knowledge of the highway code.

MOTs - these exist for motor vehicles because if unregulated, an unsafe vehicle poses a significant danger to other road users - this is rarely the case for bicycles,

Tax - there would be an arguement for levying tax on cyclists, were it require to support the cycling road/path infrastructure. However, considering road tax for cars; only a fraction of this is spent on roads, the rest goes to bolster the Exchequer and, we're told, to penalize us for carbon usage. On this basis there is no arguement for the taxation of cycling.

Insurance - many cyclists do chose to take out insurance for property loss and third party damage/injury, though these are in the minority. But again, considering 10% of cars on our roads are uninsured, difficult to persuade cyclists that they need to. Let's face it, motorists are a much greater threat to cyclists than vice-versa.

I dont have a problem with cyclists, its tractors and old biddies who hesitate at roundabouts, when its clear there is nothing coming that pees me off!

Quite right with your stats 'Victim' and a fair point. However, The sole point of pointing out the bad rather than the good is that the bad causes problems and poses a threat. The facts are there in the case that my car has been damaged by an UN-insured cyclist who chose to run of rather deal with the situation. Un-insured drivers are a problem 10% in millions of cars is a lot. BUT...if you take all the bikes on our roads and count the amount that have valid insurance im sure the percentage would be much greater than those of cars.

MOT's - However rare the occasion that an unsafe bike causes accidents this is still a problem. Having the fact that I work alongside the police closely with a relation to road accidents it is more likely/comman to be driver fault rather than the vehicle.

Tax - Altough (by your stats) a fraction goes towards the roads themselves do you not think that all who wish to use them to travel should pay towards the maintanence?

Insurance - As like the road fund license (tax) ALL who use the public highway should be insured accordingly.

The poll is to see what other peoples views are and how they relate to or see the situation.

Regards, scoobywag.

CYCLIST.....CYCLIST.....what about the idiots that ride their dog meat ooops sorry horses on the road do they have to take a test ?...and what do they know about the high way code riding 2 a breast in the middle of the road. and all they do is shout at you and be dam nasty to you .....so before we pick
on the cyclist again we should look a bit closer at other road users. and what about all the:sign0187: they leave in the road . sure if we did it something would be said about it.

cheers

No I think most cyclists are ok.

Definately....my son is a bus driver and a cyclist from another country decided to nip out in front of his bus and he killed him. Not only that he was not wearing a cycling helmet and clearly did not understand our highway code. my son is devistated and has recieved loads of councelling, it wasn't his fault ...but you try telling him that.

as for the rest no i dont think they should pay road tax..cost a lot of them use the pavements

and have valid MOT, Tax and Insurance?

What's a Cyclist? What's a Motorist?
I've got cars, and horses, and bikes!
We tend to assume that if someone is using a transport method, then that's all they use.
I once caught some chaps out who made that mistake..
Liz and I were walking through Ivybridge, when a red Metro went past, and we both felt water splashing over us. I realised we'd been had with a water gun. My Range Rover was parked opposite, so we got in it, and headed off towards Plymouth. 100 yds further on, I saw the Metro heading back towards us. I picked up an old plastic drink bottle I'd had kicking around in the car for months and whipped the cap off. It was strawberry flavour, and disgustingly sticky and horrible, which is why I hadn't drunk it. I waited until the car got level with us, then squeezed the entire contents right in the driver's face at eye level, only barely maintaining control of my vehicle due to pi$$ing myself laughing.
He'd made the mistake of assuming we were pedestrians, instead of somebody who actually owned a car! silly boy...
My view.
If you see a Cyclist, it could be me, so give me room
If you see a Horserider, it could be my Wife, so give her room or she'll sort you out pronto.
If you see an Evo 6, forget it sunshine, you won't catch me!

chanz
19-08-2008, 23:05 11
if you see an evo block him!! there worse than cyclist lol

chris

Alan Jeffery

I didn't stop laughing for several days, he must have been soaked in the stuff.
As to Evo v Impreza, Martyn and I would be having a needle match, if he didn't tune them all!
