Firstly, it will come down to how much you are willing to pay to protect your pride and Joy.
From £350 my choice 1.
For £499 My choice 2.
I would have to Recommend the Clifford. They do World Class Security.
It is also well known within the Security Industry that Clifford make the Best alarms in the UK.
A lot of companies who supply and install alarms may try to convince you otherwise, but this is due to the commission they earn.
I know i am a Qualified Mechanic/ Auto electrician
The First recommendation Is The Clifford Concept 650 and it is superb, even I have one.
However its only the Second Best available.
So the second would be Clifford Intelliguard 950 which is the best.
When I got mine, it was the Highest Quality Cat 1 alarm on the Market, but it was Not the Best.
The Best was the:
Clifford Avantgard 5
Sadly the Avantgard 5 is no longer made. However, by choosing the IntelliGuard 950 and IntelliStart, you get exactly the same features but the added benefit of Thatcham approval too!
Basically the Avantgard 5 could not get Thatcham approval due to the IntelliStart feature that was built in to the Computer system. (Alarm)
Because the vehicle can be remotely Started while the vehicle is unattended.
You may think, car starting when i am not their? surely that means someone can nick it!
No, it has a lot of features built in to detect if the vehicle is being stolen, On a cold frost morning when you start the car from the comfort of your lounge while staying in the warm, The alarm remains active, but disables the voltage drop sensor and the movement sensor. however all other sensors including the duel Zone remain Active. so if someone gets too close it sounds a warning, if they still do not move it kills the car and triggers The alarm.
Should they manage to get passed this part, they are then faced with the engine being cut if their are no keys in the ignition. As soon as the bonnet is opened or the brake pedal pressed the engine dies.
assuming the thief is able to bypass all of this, and gets off down the road, when the engine gets above a certain rpm with no keys, it enables the blackjax feature, then when the revs drop below 1200 rpm the engine dies and will not restart without your valet override code.
If you are hijacked black jax kicks in, if the drivers door is opened while the car is running, and again, waits until the car is driven above a set rpm limit and then drops below 1200 and cuts the car, so you can more than likely walk to recover your car a block away.
Thatcham refuses to allow a alarm to pass its approval, if it has a remote start feature, for the reason, it is Illegal to leave a vehicle unattended on a public highway while it is running, so if you have IntelliStart, please remember this.
IntelliStart also checks to ensure the car is in neutral before you leave, to prevent any issues of it being in gear when you try to remotely start the car.
Clifford decided their best alarm needed Thatcham approval, so the removed the IntelliStart and renamed it the Clifford IntelliGard 950. then re-submitted it for Thatcham Approval. which it passed with Flying Colours.
Clifford knew if their customers still wanted the IntelliStart feature it could be added at a later date by the customer, and still retain Thatcham approval.
Here are the Specs.
Clifford Concept 650
Lifetime warranty* Thatcham Category 1. For Maximum insurance savings. One 4 button and one 5 button remote controls with anti code grabbing technology and low battery warning. Built in two point immobiliser. Plain view coded valet/programming switch. Remote valet mode. Remote central locking. Selectable autolock/unlock. Remote panic. Black Jax anti car jacking system. Battery back up siren with remote silencing. Chirp silencing. Selectable auto arming. Interior lights on upon disarm. Channel outputs for optional accessories.
Available with either :
Ultrasonic sensors for interior protection
Dual zone proximity sensor
Glass tamper/digital tilt and motion sensors.
Cliffnet data port for optional connection to PC (cable required).
I have the proximity sensor, this is great as when someone gets too close it chirps to warn them away. You can get a voice module so you can have spoken warnings too.
Then their is the Daddy of all alarms.
Clifford Intelliguard 950
Brand new, the 950 is the UK's best Thatcham approved alarm and immobiliser system. Compatible with most of the G4 accessories including Intellistart. Packed with loads of features including dual zone proximity sensing, tilt and motion sensing, one carbon style 5 button remote control with built-in blue LED and one carbon style 4 button remote control, remote control central locking or total closure (subject to vehicle) Blackjax anti-hijacking, door, boot and bonnet protection and 120db battery back-up siren with a choice of tones. Thatchum approval, is not about the quality of the alarm, but the alarm meeting certain standards.
the main one being, the main control unit has to be in an Armor plated casing.
The unit must Immobilise a minimum of 2 circuits, inc the Ignition.
Most use the Fuel pump as the secondary circuit.
I make my second circuit the ECU. as without this the car will never run.
it also means the fuel pump will not work, and most theives will look to bypass the fuel pump. and this will not work.
The immobiliser circuit, MUST activate after 30 seconds of the ignition being switched off, or 30 seconds of the system being disarmed. if you fail to start the car.
the system can only sound for so long, then it must stop, for a set period before it can sound again.
Thatchum does not take into account of the components used in the alarm, eg. if they are good enough not to false trigger.
if they will last more than 12 months, it does not take into account the features the alarm has. etc etc.
as long as it meets the Minnimum requirements. then it can be approved.
It might go off for no reason, but thats not their concern.
Ok, not all alarms go off for no reason. but most do, especially if a car drives past close to yours the vibrations trigger the alarm.
If you accidently leave a air vent open, a gust of wind triggers it off. etc.
Clifford Is World class, it uses top quality components. (Hence why they give a Lifetime Gurantee. and a £500 anti theft Gurantee.)
it has been cleverly designed to prevent false alarms, and if for any reason a specific trigger sensor goes wrong, it can disable that sensor, to prevent triggering. It can tell the difference between a faulty sensor and someone tampering with it.
Most cliffords have an Internal and an External Proximity sensor, obviously they guard the inside and outside of the car. the external sensor, can be set to prevent people getting within a set distance of your vehicle, if they get too close, it sounds a chirp to warn them away. (Or if voice module installed. it pays your recording.) eg. (get the **** away from my car or i will Ki** the Sh** ot of you.)
again, it does not do off with passing vehicles unless set for 3 or more ft from the car, which is just too much, imo
Clifford also do a wireless Imoboliser, that can be added to any circuit in the car, and as their are no wires going to it, it makes it really difficult for any theif to find it.
IMO their is no substitute for Quality when it comes to security..
If you want to know any more give me a shout.
